MA International Relations - FAQ

Further information about the program

Is there a tuition fee?
There is no tuition fee.

Is on-campus housing available?
Jacobs University accommodation is available primarily for Bachelors students. Students may apply for campus accommodation, however, there are few places available to graduate students at any one time. Students are therefore advised to look for accommodation off campus (i.e. in flatshares).

How long are the semesters? When and where will classes take place?
The Jacobs University and the University of Bremen have slightly different semesters. Classes will be held during the Fall Semester of Jacobs University (beginning of September - mid-December) and during the Summer Semesters of both universities (beginning of February - mid-July). Semester breaks give students the opportunity to write their term papers. Classes take place at both universities but in a way which minimizes commuting.

What about transfer credits?
You should work on the assumption that you have to take all courses of the MA curriculum. The program is an integrated one in which courses refer to each other. They are also highly demanding in terms of workload and of theoretical knowledge. According to experience, students have at best covered parts of a subject in an earlier education. In that case, they should take use the opportunity to further deepen their knowledge and achieve better results.

I cannot be in Bremen when the program starts. Is there a deadline for latecomers?
You are expected to arrive in Bremen for the orientation week in order to be settled in the first week of studies. The registration deadline for latecomers is September 19th. Without exception, students arriving after September 19th will not be admitted, irrespectively of their reasons.

When do I have to start applying for my visa?
Immediately after admission. All students who have been accepted onto the program are responsible for organising their own necessary visa documents well in advance. This often takes very long and leads to unexpected difficulties. The deadline for latecomers also applies in case of visa problems! You will receive more details as soon as you have been selected as a candidate.

Do I need a computer?
All students must have a laptop of their own in order to have access to the various electronic information resources (such as the course registration system, library catalogue, online databases, printing facilities). Reasonably priced laptops are for sale at Jacobs University at the beginning of each semester. A desktop computer is not sufficient as you will be using your laptop at different locations.
